Make a Mess Storytime
Scott Bahlmann
Opening: Shake My Sillies Out - Raffi
Book: What Did You Put In Your Pocket – Beatrice Schenk de Regniers
(A fun, bright book with great sound effects. I do rather wish it had ended with something other than a handkerchief though.)
Activity: Dogs Colorful Day –
from the book by Emma Dodd
(The kids were great at identifying the colors as they appeared, and then we counted them all at the end.)
Book: I Aint gonna paint no more – Karen Beaumont
(Always a hit. They rhyming aspect helps the kids guess which body part is getting painted next.)
Activity: Bubblegum -
tune: Lollipop by the Chordettes
Let’s blow a big bubble with our gum!
(Blow between hands and spread them further with each breath.)
Oh no! We blew it too big! Pop! (clap hands together)
Now Our hands are stuck together!
(clap hands in time to the song, on each ‘gum’ and the second sticky, pretending the gum pulls them back together.)
Bubblegum, bubblegum,
Sticky, sticky bubblegum.
Bubblegum!
-unstick!-
(continue blowing and poping on other parts of the body, or clothing)
(The kids really liked this, especially giving suggestions for where the gum would get stuck next… the eyes got the biggest giggles.)
Book: Toad – Ruth Brown
(Such a fun yucky story!)
Activity: 5 Pigs from Mel’s Desk
(tune: 5 green and speckled frogs)
(The pigs are two sided, one clean and one dirty. It was a happy surprise for the kids when they got ‘dirty’ in the mud. Afterwards I ‘cleaned’ them all off with my hand.)
Five pigs so squeaky clean, cleanest you’ve ever seen,
wanted to go outside and play. Uh huh!
One jumped into the mud, landed there with a thud.
Now there are four pigs squeaky clean. Oink, oink!
Book: Squeaky Clean – Simon Puttock
(This was a big hit, the bath aspect, and the pig children really drew the kids in.)
Activity: Bubbles
(Then we got to play in bubbles, like the pigs!)
