Letter K Storytime
Scott Bahlmann
Opening: Shake My Sillies Out – Raffi
Book: Kiss Kiss – Margaret Wild
(A lovely little story that the kids can identify with. I like the repetition for our young crowd.)
Activity: Five Little Kites
(We were focusing on the color of the kites, so we had the kids identify the colors as the kites came out, and call out the colors when we got to them in the poem.)
Five little kites hung by the door,
Red went outside, then there were four.
Four little kites, pretty as can be.
Blue went outside, then there were three.
Three little kites with nothing to do,
Green went outside, then there were two.
Two little kites thought outside looked fun,
Orange went outside, then there was one.
Just one little kite hung in the hall,
Purple went outside, and that was all!
Book: Kittens First Full Moon – Kevin Henkes
(I think this is an adorable book. The grayscale illustrations are charming, as is the arc of the story)
Activity: Kitty Kitty - Brian Kinder
(I'm not sure what the tune is supposed to be for this, but we had a fun time having stuffed kittens going around the group and snuggling up to the kids during the '...kitty, kitty, kitty...' bits.)
When you're a cat you do as you please.
Take a bunch of naps climb a few trees.
Rub on my ankle and make me sneeze.
Life is like that when you're a cat.
(Chorus)
And everybody goes
Here kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty
Here kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty
Here kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty cat.
Can you do that?
And everybody goes
Here kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty
Here kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty
Here kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty cat.
When you're a cat you're covered in fur
Tummy full of milk makes you purr
You dream about fishes, mice and birds
Life is like that When you're a cat.
(repeat chorus, at a faster pace)
Book: King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub – Audrey and Don Wood
(Fantastically ridiculous, I don't know how this couldn't be a hit. I only wish there was time for each kid in the group to pour over the detail in the illustrations.)
Activity: Five Knights in Shining Armor - from Moxie
(We do some nice little actions with this song, and have fun diving the knights off the back of our flannel board.)
Five knights in shining armor, fearless and brave,
Went dragon hunting deep in a cave.
The dragon started breathing fire,
The knights’ knees were all aquiver,
So one little knight too off for the river!
(repeat counting down to zero)
Book: Knitty Kitty – David Elliott
(We got our first snow this morning, so this was even more appropriate! Another charming book.)
Activity: Bubbles
(We finished off popping bubbles. Simple, but something a kitten would appreciate. Our Thursday group threw quite a bit of mewing into the activity!)
