On the Go Storytime
Scott Bahlmann
Opening: Shake My Sillies Out - Raffi
Book: Sheep On a Ship – Nancy Shaw
(Lovely lyrical text, and fun pictures make this a winner. Little bit on the small side.)
Activity: Row Row Row
Row, row, row your boat
gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
life is but a dream.
(we acted out the rowing, then repeated with different actions:
paddle, rock, bounce, wiggle, and ended with a super fast verse of 'motor')
(The kids had a great time with this. It's fun to get suggestions from the group about what action to use, and one of the kids taught me a new ending! 'If you see a crocodile, don't forget to scream! Aaaaa!!')
Book: The Bridge is Up – Babs Bell
(This was quite the hit! I'd have the kids identify which vehicle joined the line, and eventually there was a little chorus saying 'Everyone had to wait' with me.)
Activity: Green Means Go
(I would hold up a colored circle, and the kids would respond according to the rule. We ran in place, jumped up and down, spun in a circle, and finally sat down ...ending with stop and ready for the next book!)
The drivers followed the rules in that story, do we know driving rules?
Red means...Stop,
Yellow means...Slow,
and Green means...Go!
Book: Firehouse – Mark Teague
(Great illustrations, and an engaging text. I left out the last spread, and ended with the parade.)
Song: Drivin’ In My Car – Ralphs World
(A super song! I used the red circle from the last activity for the 'Red Light' part of the music.)
Book: Clickety Clack – Rob and Amy Spence
(This was another great addition. A great build and fall, and a nice ending for the storytime.)
Instruments
(There were some noisy riders on the train, so then we got out instruments and made noise too! )
